Dick Advocaat unexpectedly quit as Belgium's national team coach and is expected to be hired by Russia.
Advocaat was hired by Belgium last October and led the team to a 3-2 record. Belgium has not qualified for major tournament since the 2002 World Cup and is preparing for the start of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship.
Advocaat is expected to take over the Russian national team from Guus Hiddink, who is leaving to become coach of Turkey. Russia also failed to qualify for the World Cup.
After coaching the Netherlands to the 1994 World Cup quarterfinals and the 2004 European Championship semifinals, Advocaat coached Zenit St. Petersburg to the 2008 UEFA Cup title during a three-year stint before he was fired last year.
