Xavier stunned by Charlotte 66-62
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Derrio Green scored 17 points and hit eight straight free throws in the final 4 minutes as Charlotte stunned Xavier 66-62 on Wednesday night.
Green, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, hit two free throws with 35.3 seconds left and then hit two more with 6.4 seconds remaining to hold off a late Xavier rally.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Charlotte (10-12, 2-6 Atlantic 10 Conference) and a seven-game winning streak for Xavier (15-6, 7-1). The Musketeers, tied for the A-10 lead when the game began, fell a game behind Duquesne, which beat George Washington 84-59.
The 49ers also got 13 points from forward Javarris Barnett and 12 points from center Chris Braswell.
Guard Mark Lyons led Xavier with 25 points and forward Jamel McLean scored 17. But guard Tu Holloway, who scored 33 in Xavier's 85-62 win over Richmond on Saturday, was held to 12, nine under his average. Holloway was 3 of 17 from the field and 0 for 8 from 3-point range.
Xavier was in control early, jumping to a 16-4 lead nine minutes into the game. Charlotte missed 11 of its first 12 field-goal attempts, and had just one field goal and two free throws on its first 15 possessions.
The 49ers caught fire at that point, and answered with a 16-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. Charlotte went on to lead 29-27 at halftime.
Charlotte then went on a 13-0 run midway through the second half and led by as many as nine at 52-43 on Goran Sirin's 3-pointer with 7:52 left.
Xavier got as close as 54-51 on two free throws by Holloway with 4:12 left, but Green started his procession to the free-throw line at that point. Charlotte hit its last 10 free throws.
Neither team shot well. Charlotte finished at 39.1 percent from the field (18 of 46), and Xavier finished at 38.6 percent (22 of 57). Xavier finished 3 of 20 from 3-point range.
Green finished 10 of 10 at the free-throw line, helping the 49ers finish 24 of 27.
