LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) Swimming's governing body is preparing to abolish age limits and extend term limits for its president and top officials.
Proposed rule changes would allow current FINA president Julio Maglione of Uruguay to seek a third four-year mandate in 2017 when he will be 81.
FINA says an extraordinary congress will debate the proposals on July 23 in Kazan, Russia, ahead of the world championships.
Under current rules, Maglione must step down in 2017 because of a two-term limit and 80-year age limit for candidates seeking election to the ruling FINA Bureau.
Another term would take Maglione to the age of 85.
FINA also wants to create a strengthened ''1st Vice President'' role from its existing five vice presidents. They include Olympic Council of Asia director general Husain al Musallam of Kuwait, a close associate of IOC power broker Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
