Wisconsin athletes in the 2016 Summer Olympics

Only five Wisconsin natives will participate in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this month, but that doesn't mean the state won't be well represented.

Eleven others with Wisconsin ties will compete, including former Marquette basketball forward Jimmy Butler and several former Wisconsin Badgers athletes. In total, the state will be represented in 10 sports, from sailing to equestrian, and by athletes ranging in age from 20 to 52.

Here is a look at the Wisconsinites and those with connections to the state who will be vying for Olympic gold:

Basketball:

 

Jimmy Butler, forward

Hometown: Houston

Team/Club: Chicago Bulls

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Butler played three seasons at Marquette and has developed into a star for the Bulls, earning All-Star honors the past two seasons and the NBA Most Improved Player award in 2015. The 26-year-old led the Bulls in scoring this past season at 20.9 points per game.

 

David Cubillan, guard (Team Venezuela)

Hometown: Maracaibo, Venezuela

Team/Club: Trotamundos de Carabobo

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Cubillan played alongside Butler during his four seasons at Marquette, during which he appeared in 133 games, second most in school history. The 29-year-old averaged 6.8 points per game as a senior in 2009-10, as the Golden Eagles lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Cubillan has played professionally in Venezuela for the past several years after briefly playing in Israel.

 

Equestrian:

 

Beezie Madden, show jumping

Hometown: Cazenovia, N.Y.

Olympic experience: Two-time gold medalist (2004, 2008), one-time bronze medalist (2008), 2012 participant

Notable: Madden, a Milwaukee native, helped the U.S. win gold medals in the team equestrian competition in 2004 and 2008 and earned an earned an individual bronze medal in 2008. She helped the U.S. to a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Olympics and took 71st as an individual.

 

Greco-Roman wrestling:

 

Ben Provisor, 85 kilograms

Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colo.

Team/Club: New York AC

Olympic experience: 2012

Notable: Provisor had a career record of 158-14 as a wrestler at Stevens Point Area High School. He won the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials but did not place at the London Olympics. The 26-year-old was the 2011 and 2013 U.S. Open champion.

 

Jesse Thielke, 59 kilograms

Hometown: Germantown

Team/Club: New York AC

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Thielke was a four-time state champion at Germantown High School and finished fourth in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. The 24-year-old was a two-year starter for the Wisconsin Badgers' wrestling team before redshirting the 2015-16 season to prepare for the Olympics.

 

Rowing

 

Grace Latz, quadruple sculls

Hometown: Jackson, Mich.

Team/Club: Vesper Boat Club

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Latz, 28, began rowing as a freshman at Wisconsin and was part of the Badgers' only Big Ten championship in 2010. She earned a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and bronze in 2014 as part of the U.S. women's four.

 

Megan Kalmoe, quadruple sculls

Hometown: St. Croix Falls, Wis.

Team/Club: New York Athletic Club

Olympic Experience: 2008 (double sculls), 2012 (bronze -- quadruple sculls)

Notable: Kalmoe began rowing as a University of Washington sophomore in 2002. The 32-year-old won a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and silver medals at the 2011 and 2014 championships.

 

Rugby

 

Alev Kelter, scrum half

Hometown: Eagle River, Ala.

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Kelter played four years of hockey and soccer at Wisconsin and took up rugby at age 22. She was part of a U.S. rugby team that won silver at the 2015 Pan American Games and took first at the NACRA Sevens Championship.

 

Sailing:

 

Annie Haeger, 470 (two-person dinghy)

Hometown: East Troy, Wis.

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Haeger, 26, began sailing at age 8 and was a four-time All-American at Boston College, winning the Quantam Female College Sailor of the Year award in 2011. Both of her parents are sailors, and her family spent a year sailing throughout Europe, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

 

Shooting

 

Michael McPhail, 50-meter rifle prone

Hometown: Darlington, Wis.

Olympic experience: 2012

Notable: McPhail, 34, was born in Platteville and attended Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He served as a sergeant first class in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and earned a bronze medal in the 300-meter rifle prone at the 2014 World Championships.

 

Swimming:

 

Cierra Runge, 4x200-meter freestyle

Hometown: Cochranville, Pa.

Team/Club: North Baltimore Aquatic Club

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Runge finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify for the Olympics and also took third in the 400-meter freestyle. The 20-year-old is transferring to Wisconsin this upcoming school year after competing one season at Cal.  Runge broke the 500-yard freestyle NCAA record at Cal and was a member of its NCAA and American record-breaking 800-yard freestyle relay team.

 

Track and Field:

 

Kelsey Card, discus throw

Hometown: Carlinville, Ill.

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Card won the NCAA outdoor discus championship this year as a senior for the Wisconsin Badgers. The 23-year-old earned 11 All-America honors and was Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year three times during her college career. She qualified for the Olympics by taking third at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

 

Evan Jager, 3,000-meter steeplechase

Hometown: Algonquinn, Ill.

Olympic experience: 2012

Notable: Jager, a former Wisconsin Badgers runner, took sixth in the steeplechase at the 2012 Olympics and sixth at the 2015 World Championships. The 27-year-old won the U.S. Olympic Trials last month. Jager competed for the Badgers in 2008 and finished eighth in the 1,500-meter at the NCAA outdoor championships that year.

 

Miranda Melville, 20-kilometer race walk

Hometown: Rush, N.Y.

Team/Club: New York Athletic Club

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Melville, 27, was a member of the track and field team at Wisconsin-Parkside. She participated in the World Championships in 2013 and 2015 and qualified for the Olympics by finishing second in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

 

Heather Miller-Koch, heptathlon

Hometown: Columbus, Wis.

Team/Club: Central Park Track and Field Club

Olympic Experience: None

Notable: Miller-Koch, 29, took second in the heptathlon at the U.S. Olympic trials to qualify for the Olympics. Miller-Koch was a Division II national champion and 10-time All-American at St. Cloud State. She finished fourth at the 2014 and 2015 USA Outdoor Championships.

 

Zach Ziemek, Decathlon

Hometown: Itasca, Ill.

Olympic experience: None

Notable: Ziemek won the NCAA heptathlon indoor championship this year for the Wisconsin Badgers and took second in the decathlon at the outdoor championships to cap his college career. The 23-year-old finished 15th in the decathlon at the 2015 World Championships.

 

Triathlon:

Gwen Jorgensen

Hometown: Waukesha, Wis.

Olympic Experience: 2012

Notable: Jorgensen qualified for the Olympics last August at the Rio de Janeiro world qualification event. The 30-year-old is the two-time reigning ITU World Triathlon Series world champion and has won 17 gold medals in the series. Jorgensen finished 38th at the 2012 Olympics after her bike sustained a flat tire.
