The Cavaliers might still be searching for a true identity, but they have their go-to guy.
Mo Williams is enjoying the opportunity.
For the second time this week, Williams' hot shooting and late-game heroics sent the Cavaliers to a home victory. Williams led the way and J.J. Hickson came alive, too, in a 93-86 win over the Grizzlies Saturday night.
Williams led everybody with 25 and scored 18 in the second half as the Cavaliers rallied from a 16-point deficit, led by as many as 12 in the third quarter then had to re-rally over the final six minutes to finish a stretch of four games in five nights at 2-2, 2-0 at home. The Cavaliers improve to 7-9 on the season.
Williams pushed in the clincher, a running one-hander in traffic, to put the Cavaliers up 5 with 6.5 seconds left. His 17-footer off the bounce beat the buzzer and the Bucks on Wednesday night.
A team that's still learning its new coach and new systems needed both wins and certainly needs to continue to follow Williams' lead. He also had a season-high 12 assists.
Hickson was aggressive at both ends, finishing with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Hickson had been held to single-digit scoring for six straight games.
"J.J. played well, exactly the way we wanted him to play," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said. "His defense on (Zach) Randolph I thought was fantastic."
Randolph had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who slip to 7-10. Rudy Gay led Memphis with 17 points.
The Cavaliers held the Grizzlies to 13-of-39 shooting in the second half.
"It was one of those gutsy wins," Scott said. "We had a good third quarter and I thought the defense played extremely well."
