Wildcats name Nevada's Johnson new baseball coach
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Nevada's Jay Johnson on Sunday night was named the new Arizona baseball coach and on Monday will be introduced, Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne announced.
Johnson, 38, was the head coach at of Nevada the last two years and was an eight-year assistant at San Diego before that.
Johnson replaces longtime Arizona coach Andy Lopez, who last month retired after 14 years with the program. He guided Arizona to the national title in 2012.
Johnson led Nevada to a 41-15 record this season, including a 23-7 record in the Mountain West Conference. Yet, the Wolf Pack were not invited to an NCAA Regional.
When he was hired at Nevada, Johnson was quoted in the Reno Gazette-Journal as saying: "I want people to say, 'That's what a baseball team looks like, in terms of toughness, extreme hustle, relentless enthusiasm, playing with energy and ultimately being a program that will help move guys on to the next level.' If we do that and establish a good, sound team culture, I think the results will be a byproduct of that."
