ST. LOUIS (AP) Wichita State's Gregg Marshall has been named Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year for the second straight season.

Wichita State (24-7) is the second seed in the conference tournament this week in St. Louis.

Marshall has led the Shockers to a school-record four straight seasons with 24 or more victories and received 23 of 40 first-place votes from conference coaches, media and sports information directors in balloting released Thursday. Greg McDermott of regular-season champion Creighton was second and Southern Illinois' Barry Hinson third despite the Salukis finishing last.

Evansville senior Colt Ryan was named scholar-athlete of the year for the second consecutive season. Ryan, who leads the Valley with a 20-point average, earlier was named first-team all-conference.
