What We Learned: DFS Lessons from June 1-5
The FOX Sports Fantasy team takes part in a one-day fantasy baseball contest every weekday (except for Thursday) to see who comes out victorius, and to learn a few things in the process. Here are the lessons garnered from this week’s action.
What We Learned…
Zippity-Do-Dah: Despite having four players score a whopping zero points on Monday, Ryan Fowler was the winner of our contest. He recorded 60 points from his two pitchers (Gerrit Cole and Clayton Kershaw). The TOR/WAS game was postponed which meant Wilson Ramos, Jose Reyes, and Michael Taylor didn’t even get a chance to earn points (Steve Souza was the other player without a point). However, who am I to judge?! Fowler’s the guy who won. And I only had one guy tally zero points that day (thanks a lot, J.T. Realmuto).
Out On A Limb: In three out of the four contests this week, the winning lineup had a pitcher only utilized by that team: Chris Archer (46.4 points), Lance McCullers (44.35 points), and Wade Miley (23.70 points) Don’t be afraid to go against the grain.
Don’t Do That: I hate calling out the new guy, Ryan Guggenbiller, who joined our WhatIfSports DK group this week, but on Wednesday he chose Wade Davis as one of his pitchers. To his credit, Guggs’ team still scored 88.35 points that day. However, Lance McCullers was only $1,600 more expensive than Davis that day. I’m all for taking risks, but don’t do that.
Price Per Position: Via DraftKings, here’s what the winning budgets from 6/1 – 6/5 averaged out to be. Starting pitchers were pricey, but eventually lowered throughout the week. First base was the most expensive position on offense, followed by, surprisingly, second base. We spent the money on Jason Kipnis and Brian Dozier this week, but only tallied seven points each on them.
This Week’s Champ: For the last two weeks, D.J. Foster has maintained possession of the title. This week, the winner, and NEEEEWWWW champion is…Ryan Fowler. Out of the four contests this week, Fowler won three of them. However, I feel like I need to mention that my average for the week (118.69) was higher than his (115.73).
This Weeks’ Big Revelation: On a two-pitcher DFS site, like DraftKings, don’t be afraid to choose one arm that may not be heavily owned. The gamble just might pay off.
