Weeden anxious for another crack at the field

BEREA, Ohio— Brandon Weeden is anxious to get back on the field after a less than stellar opening performance against the Lions. He was 3-of-9 for 62 yards and turned the ball over twice. His rating was a paltry 19.
“It’s been a quick turnaround, but it’s been good,” Weeden said. “I’m excited to get back out there and correct the mistakes from last week and just get back out and (play).”
Weeden said there’s no question what mistake he made was the biggest.
“A number of things are easy to fix,” he said. “The fumble is the main one to correct. I want to get the ball out a split second sooner.
“I took three points away from us,” he said. “That was on me.”
Weeden said he isn’t going to shy away from being aggressive.
“I’m an aggressive player, but field goals are precious in the NFL,” he said. “I’m not scared of throwing into the end zone. I want to get a touchdown, but it’s not the end of the world (if we get a field goal).”
Weeden is looking forward to playing at least the first half and maybe more against the Packers.
“He’ll play more in the game,” Shurmur said. “In the preseason, I like to see all of my quarterbacks play efficiently and manage scoring drives.”
Shurmur said the starters will play at least the first half and he will decide at halftime if they will start the third quarter.
Weeden said the more he plays in the game the better opportunity to get in the flow of the game. He said it’s tough to get into a rhythm playing just 15 plays.
“The numbers are deceiving,” Weeden said. “You’re never as bad as you think or as good as you think. When you throw only nine times, it doesn’t look good (33 percent). There’s no chance to redeem yourself.”
Notebook
Massaquoi Back: WR Mohamed Massaquoi was running with the ones in his first practice back after leaving the game against the Lions with what Pat Shurmur said was a ‘concussion’. Massaquoi participated in the afternoon walk through on Monday.
“He might play,” Shurmur said.
Massaquoi is hoping to play, as well.
“We’ll see,” he said. “I’m excited to play.”
Weeden tried to hit Massaquoi on the final play of the two-minute scrimmage on a corner route in the end zone, but T.J. Ward broke it up.
“I feel great,” Massaquoi said after practice. “I was excited to get back to practice today.”
Massaquoi left the Lions game after catching a 12-yard pass from Weeden and was hit high by Erik Coleman.
“(Coleman) gave me a good shot,” he said. “I’m glad to have a good medical staff. Of course (you want to play), but you have to abide by the rules and we did. We followed protocol.”
Massaquoi termed his head injury “precautionary” on his Twitter account, but Shurmur was emphatic he suffered a concussion. Massaquoi said he will be more careful with his Twitter account.
“On Twitter, we just want to keep certain things in house.”
Massaquoi missed time in each of the last two seasons with concussions.
“It’s good if nothing comes out of it,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s just precautionary.”
One of the biggest concerns for Massaquoi to be productive is to be able to stay on the field.
“I just want to continue to stay healthy,” he said. “I have a better grasp of the offense. One of the ways to offset (taking hits) is being aware of what the defense is doing. I have a better grasp of the offense and that gives me a better awareness.”
Massaquoi said the receivers have worked very hard trying to eliminate dropped passes, which was a problem in 2011. After having a good training camp thus far, several passes were dropped by the receivers at practice Tuesday.
“We’re focusing on getting extra work,” Massaquoi said. “We’re trying to get the kinks out (in training camp). I don’t think (drops) will be a problem.”
Through the Draft: The Browns current depth chart shows 12 of the 22 starters drafted by GM Tom Heckert in his three year’s running the draft. Four other starters were signed as unrestricted free agents or through trades.
Cameron In; Williams Out: The Browns claimed DL Ronnie Cameron off of waivers from the Bears and released RB Eddie Williams. According to ProFootballTalk.com five teams put in a waiver claim for Cameron including the Giants, Eagles, Lions, Texans and Browns.
“(Cameron) was a guy we liked in the draft,” Shurmur said. “He’ll come in and play and see what he can do.”
Shurmur was asked if the injury to DL Scott Paxson (knee) might be more serious.
“We need more depth (on the defensive line),” Shurmur said. “We liked (Cameron) against the run. We’ll get him up to speed and get him in there.”
Cameron (6-2, 305) was an undrafted free agent rookie from Old Dominion signed by the Bears. He had 73 tackles and 6.5 sacks last season in college. He wore 65 in his first practice.
Williams has missed the entire training camp with an undisclosed injury and was out of most of the OTAs and minicamps. He was on the practice squad last season from Idaho. With the release of Williams, the Browns have just two fullbacks in camp in FB Owen Marecic and FB/TE Brad Smelley.
Injury Update: Besides Massaquoi returning to practice, DE Marcus Benard returned to practice. Shurmur said Benard “might play” against the Packers. With the release of Williams, there were 13 players who did not practice: DL Frostee Rucker (leg), DB Usama Young (hamstring), DL Scott Paxson (knee), DB Dimitri Patterson (ankle), DL Phil Taylor (pectoral), LB Chris Gocong (Achilles), RB Trent Richardson (knee), TE Jordan Cameron (back), WR Carlton Mitchell (leg), LB Scott Fujita (undisclosed), WR Travis Benjamin (undisclosed) and TE Ben Watson (undisclosed) and LB D’Qwell Jackson (shoulder).
Shurmur said that Richardson is doing is working his way through his recent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
“We will be smart about bringing him back,” he said. “We won’t put him on the field until he is ready to play.”
Shurmur said the coaching staff and medical staff will determine who will play later on Tuesday.
Colt 2nd Again: Shurmur said that QB Colt McCoy would go in as the second quarterback as he did against the Lions.
“He’ll play second,” Shurmur said. “There’s no real reason other than that’s the way I want to do it.”
One of the destinations for McCoy should the Browns elect to trade either he or QB Seneca Wallace is this week’s opponent, the Packers.
Off to Cheese Country: The Browns are off on Wednesday and will travel to Green Bay for their second preseason game Thursday night at 8 p.m. The next practice open to the public will be Sunday from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
