There is no quarterback controversy with the Gophers. A junior in terms of eligibility, Adam Weber clearly remains the choice of coach Tim Brewster. Freshman MarQueis Gray remains solidly at No. 2.
"There are certainly opportunities we're going to get MarQueis each week to incorporate him into the game, but I've got the utmost confidence in Adam," Brewster said Tuesday, three days after Penn State shut down the Gophers 20-0. "He is our guy. Everybody's got to go at the pace that they think, or playing the guys that they think give you the best chance to win. And obviously we have a really good quarterback, and experienced quarterback, in Adam Weber.
"And we have a very talented young quarterback in MarQueis Gray. I think MarQueis, in time, is really going to be a special player. He's got special talents, and we're very fortunate to be in a situation where we think we've got a guy that can allow us to win football games and help us to win football games as MarQueis develops. I think that approach is the best approach in our situation. It's a very positive approach for us, and I think it will serve MarQueis the best in the long run."
Big Ten Conference history would seem to favor Brewster's philosophy. Heralded Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor, a sophomore whom the Gophers face in Columbus on Saturday and who ended up starting as a freshman, ranks ninth in the Big Ten in passing.
Illinois senior QB Juice Williams, a senior who started as a freshman, is 10th in passing. Weber is seventh.
