Waters: Cowboys are 'Supremely talented'
IRVING, Texas – Although Brian Waters said he talked to other teams during the offseason, the 36-year-old admitted that the Dallas Cowboys had been his top choice.
Waters inked a one-year deal with the Cowboys Tuesday night.
"I grew up here. This is the hometown team," the veteran guard said Wednesday after his first practice with the Cowboys. "This is a super talented football team. I believe this team has been close to breaking through and being a playoff team. Honestly, I think they have been close to being a championship football team.
"The talent, the coaching staff, the organization and growing up here were probably the biggest things that attracted me the most."
The six-time Pro Bowler, who said he sat out all of last season because of "personal reasons," wouldn't say if he was or wasn't going to play Sunday night in the season opener. Waters says that decision is up to the caching staff.
"I'm just going to get to work, try to catch up with these guys as fast as possible and let the coaches handle that" he said. "I've got a ways to go. These guys have been at it a little bit longer than me. My job is to try to come in and try to catch up as fast as I can."
The Cowboys offensive line was far from a strength before adding Waters. Since the start of training camp, injuries have left the group scrambling to find their best five. But while Waters certainly helps add stability, he said he doesn't want to be viewed as the savior of the group, adding that the line has talent and "didn't need me."
"It's obvious that this football team is supremely talented," Waters said. "Anybody who knows football knows that this football team for years has been a super talented football team.
"I think this football team is as talented as there is in the NFL. I believe in that."
