MANKATO, Minn. — Percy Harvin showed up on time to Minnesota Vikings training camp Friday, expressed his love for coach Leslie Frazier and said the issues he had with the team during last month's minicamp have been resolved.
Harvin was one of the final arrivals to Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn., on Thursday's report day. He showed up before the 4 p.m. deadline, picked up a playbook and headed toward his room in the Gage Tower dormitories. Friday, following the first practice of camp, Harvin seemed to be past any issues but again refused to discuss just what caused him to create a stir in minicamp.
After stating he had a "couple of issues" that needed to be resolved, Harvin missed one day of the mandatory minicamp. He reportedly also asked for a trade. Since voicing his displeasure, Harvin said he and Frazier talked regularly and have worked out the issues.
"I'm at camp," Harvin said. "I'm happy. I'm on board. Like I said, we talked to coach, everything is good around here. I am just ready to get out here and start getting the sweating in and get this thing rolling."
Frazier said the two had even bumped into each other on Wednesday at the barber shop, prompting the latest conversation. Frazier was assured the problems had been resolved and was eager to see Harvin at training camp on time. After getting first-round pick Matt Kalil's contract finished Thursday, the Vikings have 100 percent attendance from the 90 players on the roster.
"I feel good with where things are with Percy," Frazier said Thursday. "We've had some good conversations over the summer and excited that he's here, excited that we're all going to be here. ... I've talked to a number of guys after our mandatory minicamp. Everybody seems to be in the right frame of mind, including Percy."
Despite Harvin's public statement and reported trade request, Frazier said he still looks at the fourth-year receiver as a leader on a young Vikings team. Harvin led the team with 87 catches, 967 receiving yards and six touchdown catches last season. He added 52 carries for 345 yards and two touchdowns and had a team-leading 32.5-yard average on kickoff returns.
Harvin said he wasn't concerned about the issues being resolved and said he and Frazier are "on the same page."
"I really didn't think too much about it," Harvin said. "Like I said, me and coach kept talking, kept talking. We got it sorted out, and I told him I'd see him at camp. He said he'll see me, too."
Frazier and Harvin seemed to have a strong relationship last season, which made Harvin's statements last month more surprising -- especially given that he claimed to not have a problem with his contract.
"I love him," Harvin said. "I love Coach Frazier. I'm a big fan of his. He's almost like a father figure, like I said, in my situation. I love him. We was in direct contact the entire time."
And Harvin was pleased with the ability to meet with his coach and air his differences.
"It was great being able to go in there and open doors, being able to lay it all on the line and him give me feedback," Harvin said. "So, it was great and that's the thing you like out of your coach and that's why most of my teammates love him."
Harvin said he's excited about the potential for improvement in offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave's system for the second season and with the growth of second-year starting quarterback Christian Ponder.
"Glad to be out here with my teammates getting ready to kick off the season," Harvin said. "Where else would you want to be?"
