Vanderbilt star Swanson taken No. 1 overall in MLB Draft
Vanderbilt's prominence in the annual MLB Draft continues.
Commodores star shortstop Dansby Swanson was taken No. 1 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night, becoming the school's seventh first-round selection since 2007.
He joins Cy Young winner David Price as the only Vanderbilt players to ever be selected with the draft's top overall pick.
In deep draft of shortstops, Swanson emerged as one of the top players with his strong junior season in Nashville. Swanson is hitting .348/.441/.648 with 14 home runs in 253 at-bats while leading his team deep into the NCAA playoffs.
Past first-round picks from Vanderbilt's program include Mike Minor (Braves), Pedro Alvarez (Pirates), Sonny Gray (Athletics) and last season's No. 14 overall pick, Tyler Beede (Giants).
