COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) USA Volleyball chief executive officer Doug Beal says he will retire after 2016.

Beal has been affiliated with the national governing body for 46 years as a national team player, coach, administrator and executive. He became the CEO of USA Volleyball in 2005.

Under Beal, the federation became the national governing body for sitting volleyball, a Paralympic event, and established a separate department for beach volleyball.

Beal competed on the national team from 1970-76 and became its head coach in 1977, leading Team USA to its first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles in 1984.
