Urban Lands His Guy
The more I think about quarterback Torrance Gibson's Ohio State pledge the more I realize what a grand slam Urban Meyer hit yesterday landing this Sunshine State standout.
The veteran head coach of the Buckeyes knows exactly what kind of athlete he needs to succeed at the game's highest level. After all, the man did lead the University of Florida to two national titles when running the Gator show in Gainesville.
In order to achieve the same feat in Columbus, Meyer must recruit dynamic athletes, athletes that can make the difference in the game's biggest games. He must sign difference makers, especially at the quarterback position. That's what he had at Florida in Tim Tebow and guys like Percy Harvin.
This is exactly what Meyer is hoping for in Gibson.
Yeah, that's a lot to put on the kid from Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage but that's life in today's pressure cooker that is college football. Gibson, as an athlete, has all the goods. He's big (6-3.5/205) and fast. He can run like a gazelle and has a knack for making big football plays. Gibson excels at running the zone read. It's this aspect of his game where he should really succeed in Meyer's offense. In fact, he's only going to get bigger, strong and faster and I could certainly see him emerging early as one of the Big 10's top offensive athletes.
But he's far from a finished product in terms of playing the quarterback position. But most kids that transition from high school to college are.
As I stated yesterday I truly believe this kid is a five-star athlete. Notice I didn't say five-star quarterback. He's listed as a four-star quarterback but that's just a projection. We are looking into our crystal balls trying to figure out just how well this young man will develop.
Being completely candid, there are far better throwing quarterbacks in the state like Deondre Francois (Bradenton IMG Academy), DeAndre Johnson (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) and Jeff Smith (Clearwater Central Catholic). In fact, it's not even close, as Gibson can't throw anywhere near the level as some of these guys today.
But that's right now. Gibson has time to work on his flawed mechanics and fundamentals. If you haven't seen him he has a better arm than former Buckeye Terrelle Pryor at the same stage but Pryor was more accurate. Gibson, a southpaw, has a very long delivery like Tebow. To become the total package at quarterback Gibson has his work cut out for him.
I know it appears that I am tearing Gibson up. Honestly though I am just being forthright. I believe in this kid. I am a huge fan of Gibson. He's one of the state's top athletes who has a chance to really turn himself into an elite quarterback over time. But right now I see him as a one dimension star.
Recruiting can some times be dangerous, as unrealistic expectations are placed on many of these recruits. We all have to remember they are prospects and each one has their share of warts and blemishes. Just think back to one of Ohio State's own, Pryor, and how well thought of he was coming out of Jeannette, Pa.
But I would have done the same thing If I were Meyer in going after Gibson. He's the type of athlete he can really win big with at Ohio State. He will surround him with other top-notch athletes and play good defense and special teams.
Yesterday was big day for this program, as Meyer may have found his "franchise" guy.
HOGS LAND LB
Arkanasas got a nice commitment from a rangy outside linebacker/defensive end from Wachula (Fla.) Hardee in Derrick Graham. Graham, 6-foot-4, 225-pounds, committed to yesterday to the Razorbacks.
“This process was a humbling experience with all the trials and tribulations that I have endured over the past years,” Graham said at his announcement. “I must give thanks to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me this opportunity as well as the ability to be setting in this position at this time.
“I would also like to thank my family for their support and prayers and last – but not least – I would like to thank my teammates, (Hardee head) Coach (Buddy) Martin and the coaching staff for welcoming me on the team as well as giving me another chance.
“This has been a very difficult decision, but I feel this is the best opportunity for me – I will be attending the University of Arkansas where I will be attending the agriculture business school."
Graham is just happy for the opportunity to play in the SEC.
“Playing in the SEC has always been a dream for me while growing up in Florida and rooting for the Gators,” Graham said. “Now I will have the opportunity to play against some of the best talent in the nation week in and week out.
Graham is a three-star prospect and the nation's No. 69 ranked linebacker. He's their 18th commitment. Arkansas's class rank is now No. 16 overall.
