UPDATE: Former PGA Championship winner Steve Elkington was visited by the PGA Tour social media police Tuesday. The 10-time Tour winner raised some eyebrows earlier in the day after he tweeted an apparent gay joke that was directed at NFL draft prospect Michael Sam.
The joke badly backfired, and soon afterward, the tweet disappeared. However, after deleting the tweet, Elkington told Yahoo Sports’ Shane Bacon the "tour asked me to."
You would think, however, that a professional athlete with managers and agents and publicists, would know better than to send out homophobic tweets.

That was not the case today for golfer Steve Elkington, who felt compelled to share this tweet with the world.
