Umpire suspended for Friday's Brewers game
MILWAUKEE — Umpire Bob Davidson, scheduled to work the Milwaukee Brewers' series opener with the Minnesota Twins at Miller Park on Friday, was suspended one game by the commissioner's office for repeated violations of "standards for situation handling."
Davidson's most recent incident came Tuesday after Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel argued that the veteran umpire had obstructed the view of Phillies catcher Brian Schneider as he attempted to pick up a dropped third strike. The obstruction allowed Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro to reach first base, which set off Manuel.
Davidson ejected Manuel after a few words from the bench, and the two engaged in a heated argument after the play.
Davidson was listed as the fourth-worst umpire in the league in a recent Sports Illustrated poll of major league players. He will serve his suspension Friday and will be replace by an umpire called up from the minor leagues.
