Uggla, Kimbrel selected for NL All-Star team

Dan Uggla has been picked for two All-Star Games, but he's never started one. He'll get that chance next week.

Atlanta's second baseman was the only Brave selected to National League's starting lineup, and is one of only two Braves on the team. Closer Craig Kimbrel, who leads the NL with 23 saves, also was selected.

"It's a huge honor that the fans thought I was deserving enough to start for the National League," Uggla said. "I've been to two other ones, and this is my first time starting, so it's a huge honor. I'm very excited about it and ready to get to Kansas City and represent the National League."

Third baseman Chipper Jones, who is retiring after this season, and outfielder Michael Bourn are among the five players in the All-Star Game Final Vote, which allows fans to vote on the final roster spot for both teams. Voting will continue through 4 p.m. Thursday, July 5.

Jones and Bourn are joined in the final five by Washington's Bryce Harper, St. Louis' David Freese and Arizona's Aaron Hill. The 83rd All-Star Game is scheduled for July 10 at Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium.

"I don't want anyone campaigning or anything," said Bourn, who is hitting .302, with seven home runs, 29 RBIs and 22 steals. "That's over with. Those votes should have been done already. If I'm going to get in, I'll get in. If not, I'm going to chill for those four days."

Uggla hit .160 in June, dropping his average from .276 on June 5 to .232 after Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Nationals. He leads all NL second basemen with 11 home runs and is second with 43 RBIs. Uggla also was selected to the NL team in 2006, but didn't play in the game in Pittsburgh. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and made three errors in the 2008 game at Yankee Stadium.

Kimbrel made it 2-for-2 in All-Star Game picks after making the team last year as a last-minute sub for San Francisco's Matt Cain. He actually flew with the team to Atlanta after the final game of the first half before he caught a flight to Phoenix, where the game was held last year.

"Having this opportunity again is awesome," Kimbrel said. "Last year, I didn't know what to expect. Maybe I can soak it up a little more. I still enjoyed it a lot last year, but there might be a little less stress with the travel this year."

The 2011 NL Rookie of the Year, who leads the NL with 23 saves, pitched 1/3 of an inning with one walk in last year's game. He's continued his dominance this season with only one blown save, a 1.50 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 30 innings.

Catcher Brian McCann won't be going this year after making trips in each of his first six seasons. Philadelphia's Carlos Ruiz and St. Louis' Yadier Molina were named as the backups to Posey.

Fans elect the All-Star Game starters, but the pitchers and reserves are selected by a combination of their peers, managers, coaches, and the All-Star Game managers. Texas' Ron Washington will manage the American League squad and Tony La Russa, who retired after leading the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series championship last year, will manage the NL team.

Former Braves outfielder Melky Cabrera, who plays for the San Francisco Giants, and shortstop Rafael Furcal, who is with the Cardinals, will join Uggla in the starting lineup.
The other NL starters include: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey, Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto, San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval, St. Louis outfielder Carlos Beltran and Los Angeles outfielder Matt Kemp.
