UA baseball winning streak at six after sweep of Oregon
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats baseball team won its sixth straight Pac-12 Conference game by finishing a three-game sweep of Oregon with a convincing 13-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett.
After winning the first two games of the series by a combined score of 16-7, Arizona kept its foot on the gas pedal to capture a second consecutive conference series sweep. The Wildcats last swept back-to-back conference series in 2013.
Arizona (22-6, 7-2 Pac-12) had a seven-run second inning, which put the Ducks down 8-0. The teams traded some runs back and forth over the next few innings, with Oregon closing the deficit to 10-4 in the sixth. But a three-run home half of the inning thwarted any possibility of a comeback and capped the scoring at 13-4.
Scott Kingery was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. The junior leadoff man opened the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Kevin Newman's sacrifice fly for the initial lead.
In the second, the Wildcats sent 12 batters to the plate. Zach Gibbons' leadoff walk sparked the seven-run frame, which came on seven hits. Bobby Dalbec's two-run home run in the inning was his sixth round-tripper of the season, and marked the end of the day for Oregon starter Cole Irvin.
Irvin (1-2) entered the game with a 1.52 ERA. Against the Wildcats, the left-hander surrendered eight earned runs on seven hits and a walk in just 1 2/3 innings.
His counterpart, Tyger Talley, was off to a solid start with two shutout innings. But in the third, Talley was removed from the game for precautionary reasons.
In relief of Talley, four pitchers combined to pitch the final 6 2/3 innings. Lefty Cody Moffett (1-0) was credited with the win for two innings of work immediately behind Talley.
The Ducks scored twice against Moffett and once against Austin Schnabel to draw within six runs in the sixth before Arizona put in left-hander Xavier Borde to finish the game.
Board earned his first save of the season for 3 1/3 shutout innings in which he struck out six, walked one and allowed only one hit.
The top four hitters in the Arizona lineup each drove in two runs and scored at least one run.
In the No. 5 spot, Gibbons was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Jared Oliva had two hits, two runs scored and a pair of RBI in the No. 8 slot.
Oregon (17-11, 2-7 Pac-12) utilized six pitchers, who combined for seven walks and yielded 14 hits.
Arizona will remain home for a three-game series against No. 10 USC this week at Hi Corbett Field, starting Thursday.
