Trout to hit third as Scioscia shuffles Angels' lineup

Mike Scioscia just had to try it. So here it goes.

The Angels' skipper made the call on a lineup change that he hopes will help his struggling offense.

Kole Calhoun will bat second, Mike Trout will hit third and Albert Pujols will be the cleanup hitter when the Angels take the field Tuesday night against the Diamondbacks. The game is being televised on FOX Sports West, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

It will mark the first time this season Scioscia has written Pujols' name into the cleanup spot. It will also mark the first time Calhoun will bat second. For Trout, it will be his fourth time batting third this season. The Angels are 1-2 in the first three games.

The club enters Tuesday night's game 20th in Major League Baseball in runs scored and 26th in batting average, hitting .241 as a team.

Scioscia says the lineup change, specifically with Trout and Pujols, is something the staff has considered for some time now.

"It's very evident that the groupings that we have right now have been ineffective," Scioscia said. "I don't think it's so much because (Trout and Pujols) were hitting second (and) third (respectively), but I think it's just something that we have to try. If we can try to get guys on base ahead of them earlier in games, maybe it will help to spark some things.

"There's a lot of pros and cons in the lineup right now, but it's a direction we're going to try just because of where we've been."

It's Scioscia's hope that this is a lineup that his team can stick with.

The change can be beneficial for Calhoun who, has spent a good portion of the season hitting cleanup behind Pujols. However, in the past, Calhoun has been successful hitting in front of Trout.

"Kole is really our best player to hit in front of Mike," Scioscia said. "It's just that as we've tried to get our lineup deeper we've really needed Kole to hit behind Albert."

While the move bolsters the top of the lineup, it does lessen it's length. Scioscia can only hope the bottom of the order can start to produce.
