Trio of Reds named 2013 NL All-Stars
Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the 2013 All-Star game Saturday and three Reds have been selected to represent Cincinnati.
First baseman Joey Votto will make his fourth career All-Star Game appearance, becoming the first Red to be named a starter since Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin in 1999-2000. He currently leads the NL in OBP (.433) and walks (60), ranks third in batting average (.325) and has 15 home runs.
Brandon Phillips, the first Reds second baseman voted in since Joe Morgan, will be making his third All-Star Game appearance. He is currently batting .266 with 12 home runs and 63 RBI.
While Phillips and Votto were both selected by the fan vote, closer Aroldis Chapman was hand-picked as part of the pitching staff by NL All-Star manager Bruce Bochy. Chapman is 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA and 20 saves. It will be his second appearance in the midsummer classic.
The 2013 All-Star Game will be held on July 16 at Citi Field in New York.
