Detroit Tigers center fielder Torii Hunter will likely have to wait a little longer to see his son play football for Notre Dame.
Torii Hunter Jr., a wide receiver who committed to Notre Dame in September, broke his left femur while running a route on the second day of practice for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
Hunter Jr. underwent surgery on Wednesday and is expected to need six to eight months to recover, according to what his father told ESPN.com.
"He's distraught right now," Hunter told ESPN.com. "He's never had an injury before. I told him he'll bounce back. I know he will. He's seen me fight through injuries so he knows it can happen. You just have to work hard."
Hunter Jr. posted an X-ray of his completely fractured femur on his Twitter account, @THunterJr.
In his senior year, Hunter Jr. had 75 receptions for 1,261 yards and 15 touchdowns for Prosper (Texas) High. His team went 10-3 and made it to the third round of the Class 4A Division II state playoffs.
Like his father, Hunter Jr. is also a center fielder so the injury will force him to miss his final baseball season at Prosper.
"All of the doctors are saying he should be fine," Hunter said. "They're saying it's 99 percent (complete recovery odds), but it'll take some time."
