Todd Gurley headlines first of Cowboys' pre-draft visitors
With roughly three weeks until the 2015 NFL Draft, the Cowboys' pre-draft visitors began stopping by their Valley Ranch facility on Tuesday.
Each NFL club is allowed to bring up to 30 different prospects to visit their facility in the weeks before the draft to visit with coaches and front office personnel. The Cowboys are expected to be hosting potential draft picks, from first-round pick to late-round grades, over the next several days.
Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said at the NFL's annual meetings last month that he intended to host several of this draft's top running backs after losing DeMarco Murray in free agency. That has proven to be true to this point, as Georgia standout Todd Gurley was one of several names to make the rounds on Tuesday morning.
Kentucky defensive end Bud Dupree and Pac-12 linebackers Shaq Thompson and Eric Kendricks were also among the early arrivals to visit the Cowboys.
None of this guarantees who Dallas will select with its 27th overall pick, or any of its other six picks, however. With such a late selection, there's no telling if Gurley or any other coveted prospects will still be available.
The pre-draft visitors do give an idea of the Cowboys' gameplan, though. In recent seasons, many of the team's eventual first-round picks have visited Valley Ranch before the draft. Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin all stopped by the facility in the weeks before they were drafted.
Morris Claiborne famously did not visit, as it was widely believed the Cowboys were out of range to select the corner -- up until they traded into the No. 6 overall pick to select him.
The visits will continue through this week, with the Cowboys expected to take a long look at running back and cornerback prospects. Those two positions are widely regarded as their top two needs, along with defensive line.
