Tire Pros Team of the Week: Salpointe
The Salpointe Catholic Lancers are the Tire Pros High School Team of the Week after rolling to a 40-7 victory over previously undefeated Marcos de Niza.
Salpointe and Marcos came into the game ranked 1-2 in the Varsity Xtra Division II rankings, but Friday's game in Tucson was dominated by the Lancers from the start. Salpointe led 33-0 at the half and did not allow the Padres to score until late in the fourth quarter.
Marcos came into the game averaging 53.3 points per game, but Padres' starting quarterback Josh Eckley was hampered by an ankle injury.
Salpointe quarterback Andrew Cota completed 14 of 18 passes for 233 yards, and receiver Cameron Denson, a University of Arizona commit, had six catches for 137 yards, including a 92-yard scoring play, and also intercepted a pass.
“We’re executing well, we’re really coming together as a team,” Salpointe safety Kevin Hamlett told the Arizona Daily Star. “We’re a great team this year — everybody wants the best for everyone. We’re pretty unselfish, we stay humble and we stay hungry.”
Salpointe (5-0) remained at No. 1 in this week's Division II rankings, while Marcos de Niza (4-1) fell two spots to No. 4.
Other teams under consideration were Mountain Pointe, Westview, Horizon, Centennial, and St. John's.
