Tire Pros Team of the Week: Desert Mountain
The Scottsdale Desert Mountain Wolves are the first recipients of the Tire Pros High School Team of the Week recognition after defeating crosstown rival Scottsdale Chaparral 28-21 on Friday night.
The Wolves secured the win by tackling Chaparral receiver Tyler Whiley inside the 1-yard line on the final play of the game. The victory over the three-time defending state champions improved Desert Mountain's record to 4-0.
“This was huge for our program,” coach Tony Tabor told the East Valley Tribune. “We’ve been talking about this for a year and a half. To be the best you have to beat the best.”
Adam Cooper rushed for a pair of second-half touchdowns for Desert Mountain, which checked in at No. 9 in this week's Varsity Xtra high school football rankings.
Other teams receiving consideration were Chandler High, Peoria Centennial and Mogollon.
The Tire Pros High School Team of the Week is selected by a panel consisting of Jason Skoda of MaxPreps and the Ahwatukee Foothills News, Jason Jewell of Scout.com and 24-7football.com, Mark Heller and Kyle Odegard of the East Valley Tribune and Craig Morgan, Matt Swartz and Dave Lumia of FOXSportsArizona.com.
