Tigers Notes: Patrick McCoy to disabled list; Ian Krol reinstated

DETROIT -- One left-handed reliever goes down but another returns.

On Sunday, the Tigers placed Patrick McCoy on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled right hamstring and activated Ian Krol from the DL.

McCoy injured himself running to cover first base in the ninth inning Saturday night and was limping badly in the clubhouse after the game.

Krol has been on the DL since June 21 with left shoulder inflammation.

"It wasn't painful, really, not like the type of pain I felt back in 2011 when I hurt my elbow," Krol said. "I wasn't too worried. We came up with a game plan in the training room, a couple days off would help, stay away from throwing a little bit, do some arm exercises. I'm just glad to be back."

Originally the plan was for Krol to pitch both Friday and Sunday.

"I was supposed to start the game there (Sunday) and hop on a jet at 5:30 back to Detroit," Krol said. "But I got a call from Brad (Saturday) night around 7, told me what happened."

Krol pitched a scoreless inning Friday night, throwing 11 pitches in the game and 20 in the bullpen before that.

"It wasn't too bad, actually," Krol said. "All those guys down there, they're all my age. Good group of guys, staff was really accommodating, nice people. It was fun, actually. I had a good time."

Krol, 23, was happy to come back early.

"You're a part of the team but you're not when you're on the DL," Krol said. "It's not fun. I did a lot of eating."

In keeping with tradition, Krol sprung for an Outback meal for his West Michigan Whitecaps teammates Saturday.

"Everybody who goes on rehab does that," Krol said. "It's cool, talking to those guys, seeing how much it's changed since I was down there. I don't think much has, really. The struggles, the minor league struggles."

At least Krol's rehab wasn't a struggle.

"Everything's good," Krol said. "I feel like I'm back to normal. Still building a tiny bit of arm strength but other than that, arm feels great."

As Krol is still building up a little strength, he won't be asked to do too much.

"Certainly he can go one inning," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He went one inning the other night in Fort Wayne. I don't know how much past one inning I would have him go."

MARTINEZ REMAINS OUT

Victor Martinez remained out of the lineup for the fifth time in the last seven games.

"We've got the off day tomorrow, so there's no reason send him out there again," Ausmus said.

Ausmus has been contemplating when to give Miguel Cabrera a day off and had been waiting to see how Martinez was feeling as he didn't want to have both out of the lineup.

"At this point, I'm not waiting on that," Ausmus said. "I think we're at the point where I might have to give Miggy a day anyway. I'll talk to Miggy before doing that."

DAVIS LEADS OFF, JACKSON BATS NINTH

Austin Jackson has been leading off of late, but was in the ninth spot in the lineup Sunday while Rajai Davis led off.

"It was just a matchup thing.," Ausmus said. "I haven't looked at the Dodgers series yet, but generally, I still want to let Jackson go back, be in that leadoff spot again. Just this one matchup â it happened earlier, one game in Houston where I flip-flopped them, just because of a matchup."

Against Tampa Bay starter David Price, Jackson is 2-for-14 (.143) while Davis is 7-for-29 (.241).
