Detroit -- The Detroit Tigers have designated right-hander Zach Miner for assignment.

In four seasons with the Tigers, Miner has gone 25-20 with a 4.24 ERA in 157 appearances, including 35 starts.

Miner missed all of last season with right elbow problems and he had reconstructive surgery in May. He is being dropped to make room on the 40-man roster for Victor Martinez, who Detroit agreed to terms with last week.

Victor Martinez will make $12 million next year in the first season of his $50 million, four-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.

The catcher and designated hitter will receive $13 million each in 2012 and 2013, then earn $12 million in the final season, according to contract terms obtained by The Associated Press.

Martinez's deal to leave the Boston Red Sox and sign with Detroit as a free agent was finalized Friday.

He hit .302 with 20 homers and 79 RBIs in 127 games with Boston last season.
