Tigers' Avila leaves game after collision
Alex Avila had to leave Sunday afternoon's game in Cleveland after a scary collision with Prince Fielder.
Both players were going after a sixth-inning foul pop near the Tigers dugout, and apparently did not realize the other one had stopped. When they collided, Fielder's elbow slammed into Avila's jaw. As the ball fell to the ground, Avila took a step back like a stunned boxer, then went down.
Tigers trainer Kevin Rand immediately came out to check on Avila, who appeared woozy. After several moments, he was helped back to the clubhouse, looking groggy and walking very slowly. Gerald Laird replaced him with the Indians leaving 5-3.
The Tigers announced later in the game that Avila had a jaw injury, but did not show any signs of a concussion. He is being listed as day-to-day.
