Tide Insider: SEC schedule is here for Bama

Tide Insider: SEC schedule is here for Bama

Published Jan. 3, 2012 4:41 p.m. ET

Different players have contributed to the surge.

Forward Tony Mitchell was 3-of-6 and guard Trevor Releford 2-of-3 against Jacksonville.

Guards Trevor Lacey and Releford were both 2-of-3 and freshman Rodney Cooper 1-of-2 in the win over Oklahoma State.

The recent success doesn't mean a major shift in approach for the Tide. Bama isn't going to suddenly orient its offense to the three-point shot.

But if the Tide can keep the three-pointer mark above 35 percent, that should keep opponents from packing their defense inside and open up things for forward JaMychal Green, one of the SEC's premier forwards.

NOTES, QUOTES

Sophomore G Trevor Releford has led Alabama in scoring in each of the last two games. In addition to his 18 points against Jacksonville and 19 against Oklahoma State, he also has handed out seven assists. Releford credits coach Anthony Grant for the Tide's ability to bounce back from three losses in its previous four games.

"We are just listening to coach," Releford said. "He is telling us to use our talent. It got us here, and not to do anything that we are not supposed to do.

"What we have been doing seems to be working."

Bama has won 25 of its last 26 games in Coleman Coliseum, the loss coming to Georgetown earlier this year.

Bama is 10-3 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

BY THE NUMBERS

18 -- Bama held Jacksonville to just 18 points and 25 percent shooting in the second half of its 72-55 win over the Dolphins on Dec. 29.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES

at Georgia Tech, Jan. 3

KEY MATCHUPS

The Yellow Jackets are coming off two of their worst losses in recent years, to Mercer on Dec. 22 and at Fordham on Dec. 29, to fall to 7-6. The Tide should have an advantage inside even if F JaMychal Green is unable to play. F Chris Gaston had 23 points and 17 rebounds for Fordham in the win over the Jackets.

The Bulldogs have gotten things going in the right direction recently, winning five in a row following the 10-day break for exams in early December. G Dustin Ware has given the Georgia a lift in his new role off the bench. The Tide needs to take advantage of its edge inside against the inexperienced Georgia front line.

FUTURES MARKET

Sophomore C Moussa Gueye made his first appearance of the season in Bama's win over Jacksonville on Dec. 29. The 7-0 transfer from Lake Land College in Matoon, Ill, has been recovering from a knee injury. He had one rebound in four minutes against the Dolphins.

PLAYER NOTES

F JaMychal Green, who is nursing a shoulder injury, missed his second straight game when he sat out the Tide's win over Jacksonville.

Junior F Tony Mitchell scored 17 points against Jacksonville for his seventh consecutive game in double figures. But he hasn't exactly lit it up from the field in his last two games, going a combined 12-of-33 from the floor.

Freshman G Trevor Lacey has had back-to-back double-figure scoring games by following up his 12-point effort against Oklahoma State with 11 against Jacksonville. He is 9-of-16 from the field in the two outings.

Freshman F Nick Jacobs has averaged 8.0 points a game over his four starts after scoring nine points against JU.

QUOTE TO NOTE

"We need to maintain our defense because that is what will win games for
us." -- Junior F Tony Mitchell, after the Tide put the clamps on
Jacksonville with its defense in the second half.
