The Texas Longhorns have a coaching vacancy after co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin was named the head coach at Arkansas State on Wednesday.
"Bryan has done a tremendous job for us, and we appreciate all the energy he's poured into our program the past two seasons," Texas head coach Mack Brown said in a statement. "He's a bright young coach with great enthusiasm and passion for the kids and the game. He'll do a tremendous job at Arkansas State."
The loss of Harsin has forced the Longhorns to shuffle their staff as they prepare to play Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl.
Major Applewhite, who handled the running backs as part of his co-offensive coordinator spot, will call the plays and also serve as quarterbacks coach. Wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt will be promoted to co-offensive coordinator. Offensive line coach Stacy Searels has been elevated to assistant head coach for offense while tight ends coach Bruce Chambers, who recruited with Wyatt, now will be the primary recruiting coordinator.
Texas is looking for a coach to replace Applewhite and work with the running backs.
