Texas A&M president: Rival Texas 'not relevant to us'
R. Bowen Loftin, the Texas A&M president, looks like such a kindly old chap in his bow tie and Colonel Sanders mustache.
But beneath the veneer is a cold-blooded assassin, and if you don't believe that, you have to hear what he said at the Southeastern Conference meetings when somebody asked if he could deliver a line about the University of Texas.
"I don't have to make it anymore," he said. "It's not relevant to us. That's the whole point. It's not an important issue."
That's not exactly the territory of Ohio State president Gordon Gee, but it's reasonably safe to say the UT athletic department is a little bit down, and it's reasonably safe to say Loftin isn't above giving it a little kick.
He's right. UT and Texas A&M are not all that relevant to each other anymore, but it has been a while since a Texas A&M president has been in a position to act like UT doesn't even matter.
For a Texas A&M graduate like Loftin, that must have felt good.
