COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin says he and Bill Byrne are in talks regarding the end of Byrne's tenure as the school's athletic director.

University spokesman Jason Cook says "president Loftin confirmed earlier (Friday) that he and Bill Byrne have been in discussions regarding a mutually agreeable transition."

Byrne's contract ends Aug. 31, 2013. Loftin hasn't yet worked out the details or timing of when a change will occur.

Byrne was hired at Texas A&M in Dec. 2002. The Aggies are moving from the Big 12 Conference to the Southeastern Conference on July 1.

Loftin's comments were first reported by the Dallas Morning News and San Antonio Express News.
