TCU DE Fields to have foot surgery, out rest of season
TCU defensive end Devonte Fields will undergo foot surgery and miss the rest of the season, a team official confirmed to FOX Sports Southwest.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram first reported the story.
Fields suffered a broken bone in a 20-10 loss to Texas Tech on Sept. 12. Fields will be eligible for a medical redshirt and retain a year of eligibility because he appeared in less than 30 percent (three games) of TCU's games in 2013.
Fields, an Arlington, Texas native, won Associated Press Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors as a true freshman in 2012. During the offseason, he was suspended for two games for a violation of team rules. But he returned Sept. 7 for a quarter against Southeastern Louisiana.
Coach Gary Patterson indicated his early return was to prevent injury if he made his debut in TCU's first Big 12 game of the year.
In 2013, Fields made four tackles and two tackles for loss -- both against Texas Tech.
He led the Big 12 with 18.5 tackles for loss in 2012.
