Talent makeover at USC

Talent makeover at USC

Andy Enfield and staff were given a difficult task in rebuilding the USC program. When Enfield arrived from Florida Gulf Coast, he was given a team almost completely void of Pac-12 level talent.

However, Enfield and his assistants - associate head coach Tony Bland, Jason Hart and Kevin Norris - are recruiting at a rate that USC hasn't seen in years, which should speed up the Trojans' rebuilding efforts.

In the last year, USC has landed five Top 100 prospects in point guard Jordan McLaughlin, shooting guard Elijah Stewart, small forward Malik Marquetti, post Chimezie Metu and, most recently on Aug. 7, power forward Bennie Boatwright.

Another former Top 100 prospect, Katin Reinhardt, transferred in from UNLV in May of 2013 and sat out last season.

Assuming there's no turnover amongst that group, that will give USC six former Scout.com Top 100 prospects on its 2015-16 roster.

How significant is that accomplishment for Enfield, in what will be year three of his tenure at USC?

Since Scout.com started ranking prospects in 2002, USC has never had a team with six former Top 100 prospects all on the same roster before.

In fact, in Enfield's 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes, he's landed more Scout.com Top 100 prospects out of high school than the Trojans signed in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 combined.

Now, all that matters at the end of the day is winning and while Enfield is quickly restoring talent into the USC program, he'll ultimately be judged by how successful his teams are.

But he's recruiting at a rate that USC hasn't seen in quite some time. Given where USC's roster was when he took it over and where it's headed, that can only be good news for Trojans fans moving forward.
