Heavy favorite Take Charge Indy broke stride in the backstretch of the $200,000, Grade 2 Monmouth Cup on Sunday afternoon, breaking his left front foot.

The injury will require surgery to fix. Take Charge Indy was the 3-5 favorite with Gary Stevens aboard and seemed to be putting the race away when the horse took a bad step in the backstretch with a three-length lead, forcing Stevens to ease him.

''I heard a loud pop around the half-mile pole,'' said Stevens, the Hall of Fame jockey. ''He wanted to continue, but I pulled him up.''

The winner was former Kentucky Derby entrant Pants on Fire, with Paco Lopez riding.
