Swisher receives Feller award
Indians first baseman/designated hitter Nick Swisher has been named one of the recipients of this year's Bob Feller Act of Valor Award.
The Feller Award , which is in its second year, recognizes three recipients -- one Baseball Hall of Famer, one current player, and one US Navy Chief Petty Officer -- each of whom possesses the values, integrity and dedication to serving our country that the former Indians Hall of Famer displayed.
Swisher, former Dodgers manager and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda and Senior Chief Petty Officer Carl Thompson of the United States Navy will formally receive their awards at a ceremony on Nov. 5 at The United States Navy Memorial in Washington.
"To me the first thing that comes to mind is honor and pride. Just to be in the same breath of a man like Feller I could not be more honored and grateful," said Swisher in video comments about the award. "Just to see what the military go through each and every day, they deserve all the credit."
Swisher supports the Wounded Warriors Program and assists Philips Norelco's charitable activities on Operation Homefront. Swisher and his wife JoAnna Garcia Swisher have also participated in USO tours to Afghanistan.
Last year's recipients were former Yankees great and Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and U.S. Navy Chief Hospital Corpsman Garth Sinclair.
