For the first time since 1971, the Dallas Marathon scheduled for Sunday was canceled due to a massive winter storm that hit the North Texas area as well as several other areas of the U.S. Thursday night and Friday morning.
Organizers announced the cancellation of the marathon Friday afternoon stating the decision was made after consulting with Dallas police and city officials citing the icy conditions would not be ideal for the runners, volunteers, and spectators.
The marathon was expected to draw about 25,000 runners, many of whom were unable to get into the area due to the the cancellation of about 1,000 flights at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as well as many roads in North Texas being put out of service due to the inclement weather.
The race will not be rescheduled and along with months of training going to waste, participants will likely not receive a refund of the registration fee that was around $100 per runner, according the frequently asked questions portion of the marathon's website heading into the week.
