Probably in the past, you recruited football players by talking to them about your program and their opportunity to play in it. You'd tell the mom about the academic opportunities. You'd take them around campus and make sure they saw all the pretty girls. You'd show them the trophy case.
That is of a bygone era. You know what you need now? A DJ.
Friday night, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin brought a DJ to Kyle Field to spin records at a recruiting event the Aggies call "Friday Night Lights." Yeah, DJ Double R started spinning from inside the trailer of an 18-wheeler, dazzling about 35 recruits from the classes of 2014 and 2015, according to the San Antonio Express News.
And then the Aggies had a scrimmage.
The idea behind it is twofold. Sumlin is trying to impress recruits, but he is also trying to break up the monotony of spring practice for players who are already in the program. Turning it into a scrimmage and playing it at night turns it into something of an event, and the players seem to like it.
"'Friday Night Lights' is where I earned my starting spot last year," receiver Mike Evans told the Express News.
