Stephen Weiss, the Florida Panthers' longest tenured player, signed a five-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
Weiss' deal is worth a $4.9 million per season, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. The center earned $3.1 million in 2012-13, the final year of a six-year contract worth $18.6 million.
Panthers GM Dale Tallon indicated last week he was still working to re-sign the center. Weiss became an unrestricted free agent Friday.
The fourth overall selection in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Weiss is Florida's all-time leader in games played (654) and assists (249). In his 11 seasons with the Panthers, the 30-year-old accumulated 145 goals and 349 points, which rank second on the team's all-time list.
The two-way pivot appeared in just 17 games last season, scoring a goal and three assists, before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery.
