LEEDS, England (AP) Sri Lanka seamer Dasun Shanaka took three quick wickets on debut to leave England in trouble on 57-3 at lunch in the first test on Thursday.

After England weathered a tough spell after being put into bat, Shanaka removed captain Alastair Cook and No. 3 Nick Compton in the same over, and then had Joe Root caught in the slips in his next to give Sri Lanka the early advantage at Headingley.

Cook was caught behind for 16 attempting an expansive cover drive, leaving him 20 short of 10,000 test runs. Compton and Root were out for ducks and Shanaka ended the session with outstanding figures of 3-6.

Opener Alex Hales was 38 not out and test debutant James Vince 0 not out after surviving 15 balls before lunch.
