DUNEDIN, New Zealand (AP) Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl Thursday in the first cricket test against New Zealand at the University Oval.

Batsman Udara Jayasundera makes his debut in an inexperienced lineup for Sri Lanka, which is rebuilding after the recent retirements of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Captain Angelo Mathews didn't hesitate to bowl first on a green pitch and was one of four seam bowlers for Sri Lanka. The tourists have lost leading fast bowler Dhammika Prasad to a back injury but named a pace attack comprising Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal and Mathews.

New Zealand also included four seamers, including veteran fast bowler Neil Wagner ahead of spinner Mark Craig.
