COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) Kusal Mendis scored 69 runs from as many balls and was backed up by aggressive 50s from captain Angelo Mathews and Kusal Perera, as Sri Lanka recovered from a poor start to score 288 in the second one-day international against Australia on Wednesday.

Seam bowler James Faulkner took a hat-trick later in the innings to help Australia bowl Sri Lanka just shy of its allotted 50 overs.

Mathews opted to bat first after winning the toss but Sri Lanka soon lost two wickets for 12 runs.

Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal, who made 48, shared 125 runs for the third wicket to pull Sri Lanka out of trouble.

Two more quick wickets reduced Sri Lanka to 158-5, but Mathews and Perera shared a stand of 103 to revitalize Sri Lanka's innings.
