Spill mars last race of Aqueduct card

BY foxsports • April 7, 2012

A horse sustained a fatal injury during a spill in the final race Saturday at Aqueduct, and a jockey was removed by ambulance.

Bacchi stumbled and fell while running down the backstretch during the 11th race, an event for claiming horses, on the Wood Memorial card. Carlos Montalvo, his rider, was taken to a hospital for X-rays of his shoulder.

Rotten to the Core stumbled over the fallen horse and died instantly from head or neck trauma. Ryan Curatolo was dumped onto the track but did not appear to be seriously injured.

Bacchi escaped the pileup with only a knee laceration.
