MADRID (AP) European 200-meter champion Bruno Hortelano has seriously injured his right hand in a car accident.

Doctors in Madrid say Hortelano, who ran in the 200 at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, was hospitalized Monday morning after the car he was in collided with a truck on a highway in Spain.

He was treated for a head injury and underwent surgery to repair damage to his hand.

The Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre did not immediately release information about Hortelano's condition, but agent Alberto Armas told Spanish media there was no risk of him losing his hand.

The car was reportedly being driven by Hortelano's cousin, who was not seriously injured.
