Sources: D-backs talking with Brewers about pitching
The Arizona Diamondbacks are showing continued interest in multiple Milwaukee Brewers pitchers, major-league sources told FOXSports.com.
The Diamondbacks and Brewers are in the midst of ongoing discussions about starter Yovani Gallardo and relievers John Axford, Jim Henderson, and Francisco Rodriguez, the sources said.
No deal appeared close or imminent as of Wednesday night.
The Diamondbacks’ farm system is deep enough that they could conceivably acquire Gallardo and one of the relievers. Arizona has needs in both areas, with starters Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and Daniel Hudson on the disabled list and Heath Bell still subbing for J.J. Putz as the closer.
Putz returned from the DL recently but blew his first save opportunity. Bell has a 4.93 ERA since the beginning of last year.
Interest in the Brewers’ relievers could intensify over the coming days, now that White Sox setup man Jesse Crain – one of the more sought-after relievers on the trade market – is on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain.
