Former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington will be back in the major leagues.

According to a source Washington will join the Oakland A's as a fielding coach with his first day on the job Friday when the A's are in Tampa Bay for a series against the Rays. That series starts Thursday.

Washington will not be with the team during games but will be able to work with players before the game.

Washington, the most successful manager in Rangers history, was a coach with the A's from 1997 to 2006. He left Oakland to take the Texas managing job in 2007 and guided the Rangers to the World Series in 2010 and 2011.

Washington resigned suddenly last September for personal reasons and then two weeks later held a news conference in Irving, Texas, and said he was unfaithful to his wife. He has been at his home in New Orleans and has worked as a volunteer coach for the University of New Orleans.

Washington will have his hands full in trying to resurrect the Oakland defense. The A's lead the majors in errors.

Oakland doesn't play a series in Texas until June 23.
