Sooners RB Perine helping team despite lack of rushing yards
Samaje Perine led the conference in rushing yards last season with 1,713.
He had just 111 through two games this season.
And that's OK with the Oklahoma Sooners sophomore who made a pair of plays against Tennessee without carrying the ball. Perine caught a touchdown pass that pulled OU to within 17-10 in the fourth quarter. And trailing 24-17 in overtime on fourth down, after quarterback Baker Mayfield faked a handoff to Perine, Perine switched back to his right and blocked cornerback Emmanuel Moseley freeing up Mayfield for the fourth down touchdown.
"I did a better job of blocking than running," Perine said to The Tulsa World after Saturday's win against Tennesee. "And I'm OK with that."
There's a good chance Perine will do more carrying of the ball this Saturday when the Sooners take on Tulsa in Norman, Okla. Tulsa comes in 2-0 but ranked No. 119 against the run in the nation.
"He's a great teammate and a great leader," Mayfield said of Perine during Monday's press conference. "It goes unnoticed to a lot of people, but inside the program, we notice the little things."
Perine wound up with 78 yards on 23 carries against Tennessee.
