Skip injures oblique
JUPITER, Fla. - The Cardinals are concerned about the status of Skip
Schumaker after he suffered a right oblique injury while fouling a pitch
off in the fourth inning Friday.
Schumaker, who was forced to miss the National League Championship
Series last year after suffering a similar injury, acknowledged the
injury was to the same spot but said the current one, "feels worse."
The left-handed hitting Schumaker jogged slowly down the line on a
ground ball on the next pitch and the DH was removed for a pinch-hitter
his next time up.
"Concerned," manager Mike Matheny said after the game. "I haven't talked
to anybody, I just walked in, but I knew probably one pitch ahead and
tried to slow him down and didn't so neither of us did the right
thing.
"I asked if he was alright and he told me was, my gut told me he wasn't,
and I let him and that made it worse. I'm not real happy about that
with myself."
A frustrated Schumaker left the clubhouse quickly but said how he felt a
day later on Saturday would be a key as to determining how serious the
injury is.
