Sheehy tallies 100th career point as Gophers hold off Michigan State

It wasn’t pretty, but captain Tyler Sheehy and the Minnesota Gophers did just enough to get past the lowly Michigan State Spartans 5-4 on Thursday night.

In his 100th career game in maroon and gold, Sheehy scored twice and tallied an assist in the win to surpass the 100-point mark.

“It’s a pretty cool milestone,” Sheehy said via the team’s Twitter account. “I just have to be thankful for a lot of my teammates these past three years.”

Sheehy is the 84th Gophers player to reach the 100-point milestone.

Minnesota built a 4-1 lead in the second period, thanks to goals by Sheehy, Jack Ramsey, Steve Johnson and Tommy Novak -- two of those coming shorthanded.

But the Spartans battled back with the next three goals, tying the game 4-4 midway through the third period.

And, yet again, the Gophers turned to captain Sheehy for an answer. Sheehy took advantage of a Spartans turnover in the neutral zone and found the back of the net to clinch a 5-4 lead with under three minutes to play, earning Minnesota's fifth conference win of the year.

Gophers goaltender Eric Schiernhorn stopped 18 shots to pick up his 12th win in net this season.
