Sean Miller adds former ASU assistant Phelps to staff at Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona head men's basketball coach Sean Miller announced Monday that Mark Phelps will join his staff as an assistant coach.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native will bring 19 years of experience at the Division I level, including five as head coach at Drake University.
Phelps spent five seasons working with Miller as assistant coaches on Herb Sendek's staff at North Carolina State from 1996 through 2001, and Phelps later served as an assistant to Sendek at Arizona State for two seasons.
"Mark Phelps and I have known each other since 1996, when we started working together at NC State," Miller said. "Since then, Mark has been the head coach at Drake University and worked as an assistant coach in some of the most competitive conferences in college basketball, including the Pac-12.
"He is a person of high character, an excellent teacher of the game and a relentless recruiter. He represents the 'total package' as an assistant coach. I am excited to add him and his family to our staff and the future of Arizona basketball."
Phelps coached Drake to 77 wins in five seasons, from 2009 to 2013. Following that, he spent one season as an assistant at Missouri and last season as an assistant at Marquette.
"My family and I are very excited to join the Arizona basketball family," Phelps said. "The elite reputation of this university and of Wildcat basketball is recognized across the country. Having previously coached in the Pac-12, I have a unique vantage point on how special this program is."
